How Do Clear Aligners Work?

Clear aligners are nearly invisible removable trays custom-fitted to your teeth. As you wear the aligners, the molded tray applies pressure to move your teeth into the correct position.  

Generally, you’ll wear the aligners around the clock for one week before switching to a new tray. Each tray moves your teeth by about a fraction of a millimeter, and the number of trays you need depends on your individual needs.  

You’ll remove your aligners only to eat or drink and to brush and floss your teeth, and that’s one of the many benefits of aligners. Unlike traditional metal braces, you can eat anything without restriction while undergoing aligner orthodontic treatment.

Who Can Get Clear Aligners?

The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children have an orthodontic check-up by age 7. Early interceptive treatment during this time can help guide proper tooth alignment and jaw development, potentially reducing the need for more extensive treatment later on. What to Expect During Treatment

The treatment process is smooth and straightforward, allowing you to achieve straighter teeth without putting your lifestyle on hold.  

Step 1: Assessment

Before opting into clear aligners, we’ll determine if they’re suitable for you. We’ll take a digital impression of your teeth and take digital X-rays to evaluate your bite, bone structure, and overall health.  

Step 2: Digital Impressions

Once you decide on aligner treatment, we’ll take digital impressions of your teeth using your X-rays and other technology, such as an intraoral camera and scanner. We’ll make a 3D model of your teeth, plan your treatment, and send the impressions to the lab for creation.

Step 3: Wear Your Aligners

It takes about a month for the lab to make your aligners. Once your trays arrive in our office, you can collect and wear them, changing them once a week as instructed.  

Step 4: Smile Check-Up

At the end of treatment, we will re-assess your smile and decide whether you need further treatments to achieve optimal results. These refinement trays are a set of extra trays that put the finishing touches on your smile.

Step 5: Maintenance

Once treatment is complete, you’ll wear a retainer full-time initially and weekly throughout life to keep your teeth in position and prevent dramatic shifts. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene practices will help maintain your smile.
