What are Dentures?

At Whole Dental Wellness in Birmingham and Roseville, dentures are designed to replace missing teeth and provide a better overall appearance. As a removable appliance, dentures make it easier to eat and speak compared to not having any dentures at all.

Denture Benefits

Did you know 36 percent of people in the U.S. believe that they would have a better social life if they had better teeth? Dentures can provide more than an aesthetic smile. Other benefits include:

  • Better speech
  •
  • Look years younger
  •
  • Increased confidence
  •

The longer you go with missing teeth, your face can become sunken, giving you a much older appearance than your actual age. Dentures provide a healthier shape to your face and help to keep your jaw aligned for better speech.

Am I a good candidate for Dentures?

The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for dentures is to schedule a consultation with one of our specialist-led dentists.

We can fully assess the severity of tooth loss at our Birmingham and Roseville dentist offices, discuss your denture options, and take dental scans or impressions if needed. If you are missing several teeth, it is crucial to get dentures because the longer you wait, you are at risk for the following:

  • Additional tooth loss
  •
  • Gums can shrink from bone loss
  •
  • Remaining teeth shift and weaken
  •

Whole Dental Wellness offers denture options for our Birmingham, Roseville, and Detroit metro residents. Call today! One of our dedicated dental staff will be happy to schedule your consultation.

A Proper Denture Fit

There will be a period of adjustment with your dentures. At first, the dentures may feel uncomfortable for a few weeks. It takes a few weeks for your cheek muscles and tongue to adjust to the feel of your dentures and learn how to keep the dentures in place.

Along with your new fit, the dentures may cause an excess of drool. Your speech may be interrupted during your adjustment period. You may notice, there are particular ‘s’ or ‘th' sounds that make you sound like you have a lisp. Keep in mind; your speech will improve once your mouth gets used to your new dentures. Our dental team will make sure any denture irritations or concerns are addressed as quickly as possible.

Types of Dentures

Your dentures are customized at Whole Dental Wellness to closely resemble your natural teeth, to give you the best dentures Birmingham and Roseville have to offer.

There are even options to improve your smile. Here are your denture options to consider:

Conventional

The conventional removable denture requires all of your teeth removed. After six months of healing for your gums, you can be fitted for your conventional dentures.

Implant-Supported Overdenture

Two dental implants are inserted into the lower jaw to dramatically increase your denture stability. Implant-supported overdentures provide a firmer fit and can stop those embarrassing denture slippage moments when eating or talking.

Immediate

You will leave with your removable denture the same day your teeth are extracted with the immediate denture option. Our dental team will take photos, measurements, and impressions of your jaw and bite before your extraction surgery. You will still need to allow adequate healing time for your jaw and gums, but you will have your denture with you. However, if you notice an inadequate fit with your immediate dentures, it may be due to your gums shrinking. If you have significant gum shrinkage, your dentures will need remodeling for a better fit.

Dentures FAQs

Will dentures affect how I speak?

You may have a short period of adjustment after getting your dentures and practicing pronouncing certain words until it feels comfortable. However, if you notice a clicking sound while you talk, contact your dental specialist to ensure a proper fit. Your dentures may slip at times when you cough, laugh or smile. Reposition your dentures by biting down softly and swallowing; this should provide the suction for your dentures to remain in place.

Is it difficult to eat with dentures?

It may take some practice to get used to eating with new dentures. It is best to start with soft foods or cut your food into small pieces. Be sure to chew on both sides of your mouth. Avoid sticky and hard foods or candies that can chip your dentures.

Does insurance cover my dentures?

Most insurance providers cover all or most of the cost of dentures. However, our dental team will work with your insurance provider to check for coverage options.

How do I keep my dentures clean?

It is vital to properly care not only for your dentures but your mouth as well. Whether you have full or partial dentures, proper oral hygiene needs to continue to avoid bacteria build-up and the risk for gum disease. Clean your dentures with a denture cleaner or mild dishwashing soap. Caring for your gums and remaining teeth are equally important. Swishing with an antimicrobial mouthwash will aid in keeping bacteria away.

Do I still need to go to the dentist if I have dentures?

It would be best if you had routine dental visits every six months, even with dentures. Your dentist wants to make sure your dentures continue to fit correctly, but your mouth/gums require examination for oral diseases and to be professionally cleaned.
