What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is an approach to professional oral care that focuses on enhancing your appearance.

While general dentists address basic dental needs and issues, a cosmetic dentist also places elevated importance on improving the aesthetics of your smile. Typically, cosmetic dentistry involves adding specialized materials to your teeth or gums to improve their appearance. If you have chips, cracks, discoloration, or gaps in your smile, cosmetic dentistry can often provide the solution.

Composite vs. Porcelain Veneers – what is right for me?

We are proud to offer both traditional porcelain veneers and composite bonded veneers. There are several advantages to both so we will work with you to determine what is the right option for you.

Some advantages of composite resin veneers include:

  • They are created in one visit
  • They are less expensive than porcelain
  • They can be repaired

However, composite veneers may not be quite as lustrous and natural looking as porcelain veneers, are not quite as resistant to stains, and are less durable than their porcelain counterparts.

Am I a Candidate For Dental Veneers?

At our offices in Birmingham and Roseville, dental veneers are offered because they provide an amazing cosmetic option to improve the attractiveness of your smile

However, it is important to remember they do not realign or correct your bite the way orthodontic treatments can. If the way your teeth come together and function (your bite) is negatively affecting your oral health, orthodontics may be a more appropriate treatment. Don’t worry. We will discuss all of this with you at your consultation appointment so you can decide if veneers are the right treatment option for you.

If I do decide to get veneers, how does the process work?

Unlike composite veneers, which are typically done in one visit, porcelain veneers typically require two visits.

During your first visit we will:

  • Evaluate your teeth and bite
  • Discuss your desired outcome and expectations
  • Prepare your teeth. To accomplish this we trim a very small amount of the your top tooth structure (enamel) to allow enough space for your new veneers, ensuring they won’t look bulky. Sometimes we need to remove a bit more tooth structure to get you the results you are after. If this is the case, we will place temporary veneers to protect your teeth while we are waiting for your veneers to arrive back from the lab.
  • Take digital impressions of your newly prepared teeth. We send these impressions to one of our trusted cosmetic labs and within 2-4 weeks your veneers arrive at our office

At your second visit, we will:

  • Remove temporary veneers (if you were wearing any)
  • Evaluate your new porcelain veneers with your dentist to ensure you love their shape, color, fit and feel, if they do not meet your expectations for any reason, we can make changes before they are cemented to your teeth
  • Clean your teeth in preparation to cement your new veneers
  • We apply a mild acidic solution to the bonding area
  • After the cement is hardened with a curing light, our team will remove any excess cement and polish your veneers, giving them the glistening sparkle you have been waiting for

How do I maintain my gorgeous new smile?

Just like anything else, proper care is essential for maintaining the dazzling appearance and longevity of your dental veneers. The best ways to maintain dental veneers include:

  • Regular visits to our Birmingham or Roseville dental offices for professional evaluations and cleanings of your dental veneers. The interval between visits depends on your oral health and is typically 2-4 times per year
  • Avoiding using your dental veneers to bite, crack, or chew hard objects such as nuts or ice.
  • Optimal at home hygiene (brushing and flossing)

By following these tips, your porcelain veneers can last 10 to 15 years!
